Who’s behind
the miles?
My older son’s middle name is Miles, and running has been part of my life since my early twenties. Some of my best memories are of epic runs with my wife, Heather. After we had kids, finding time for long runs became a lot harder.
Last year, my kids started getting much more active. Running around with them left me exhausted and struggling to catch my breath. With fifty right around the corner, I realized I wasn’t ready. I remembered saying when I was twelve or thirteen, “When I’m fifty, I’ll run fifty miles,” or something close to it. Welp, here we are!
My birthday is in October. I’ve been training for a little over a year, and now it’s time to put those words to work. Running fifty miles was never the most important part of this journey. What matters most is everything that brought me to this point.
I’m both excited and terrified. Part of me is ready to put the run behind me, but I know I’ll be sad when this experience comes to an end. Here’s to fifty more years to come. And no, I will not be running one hundred miles when I turn one hundred.
